Plot Summary: The film is based on a historical event. François Vatel (1631-1678) was in charge of cooking for the Duc de Condé. He prepared elaborate meals and entertainment for King Louis XIVth when he visited the Condé's castle of Chantilly. These were very political events, with the further of the Duc de Condé status with the king at stake -- even, perhaps, the destiny of France.
Gérard Depardieu plays the role of Vatel. He's a master craftsman, a man of brilliance but not of birth. During the King's visit he falls in love with Anne de Montausier (Uma Thurman), who returns his affection but she's unfortunately also caught the eye of the King.
